ESRT in 2023: A Year in Review

With New Year’s Eve on the horizon, we can’t help but reflect on ESRT’s major events and achievements. From prestigious awards and accolades to engaging events for tenants, ESRT had much to celebrate this year.

JANUARY
EQUALITY ACCOLADE
ESRT announced that it was included in the 2023 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index (GEI) – a modified market capitalization-weighted index developed to gauge performance of public companies’ commitments to transparency in gender data reporting – for the second consecutive year in January.
FEBRUARY
CONTINUED EXCELLENCE
In February, ESRT became one of the first in the world to achieve the WELL Health-Safety Rating across 100% of its portfolio for the third year in a row. ESRT additionally committed to the International WELL Building Institute’s WELL at scale program and its inaugural WELL Equity Rating.
MARCH
CERTIFIED GREAT
ESRT was recognized as a 2023 Great Place to Work in its first year of participation, the company announced in March. The recognition is awarded to the top organizations based on rigorous methodology and validated employee feedback and experiences.
APRIL
KEEP IT UP
To honor consistent ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year recognition, ESRT was awarded the 2023 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in April. ESRT’s outstanding leadership in environmental and public health initiatives receive continued recognition from third-party organizations.
PLATINUM STATUS
ESRT was selected as a 2023 Green Lease Leader by the U.S. DOE’s Better Buildings Alliance and the Institute for Market Transformation for the second consecutive year. As one of only six awardees to achieve the Platinum distinction, ESRT’s integration of high-performance leasing and sustainability practices contributed to the esteemed recognition.
PUPPY PARTY
Bideawee and Waldo Rescue partnered with ESRT to host an on-site adoption event for tenants in mid-April. Chewy, Dog and Co., and Little L’s Pet Bakery provided treats and adoption boxes for the lucky pups who met their future families at the event.
SUSTAINABILITY HIGHLIGHTS
ESRT released its annual Sustainability Report to highlight its major achievements, goals, and transparent metrics for Sustainability throughout the previous year. The company reported major milestones such as its carbon neutrality across its entire portfolio and publication of the “Empire Building Playbook: An Owner’s Guide to Low Carbon Retrofits,” among others.
MAY
POWERHOUSE PAIR
Commercial Observer named ESRT’s Chairman, President, and CEO Tony Malkin and EVP, Chief Operating Officer & Chief Financial Officer Christina Chiu as part of commercial real estate’s most powerful individuals in the 2023 Power 100 list. The publication’s annual Power 100 list recognizes and honors key influencers who drive the future of the commercial real estate industry.
LONG LEASE
Rising Ground – a leading nonprofit organization in human services for children, adults, and families in the greater New York City area – signed a 30-year lease for a full floor, 29,566 square foot space at 1333 Broadway.
JUNE
WE’RE #1 – AGAIN!
The world-famous Empire State Building was named #1 Attraction in the United States – and #5 worldwide – by Tripadvisor travelers in the 2023 Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best for the second consecutive year.
ICONIC DEALS
ESRT announced that it signed two new long-term leases with Skanska and Aprio for a total of 40,000 square feet at the Empire State Building.
ROCK THE BOAT
ESRT colleagues got a unique New York perspective in the second annual Athletics Committee kayak excursion on the Hudson. In pairs and single kayaks, participants sailed past the Intrepid and the Concord and took in incredible views of the New York City skyline.
JULY
NEW FACES
The New York Times Company Chief Growth and Customer Officer Hannah Yang and Wiley EVP & CFO Christina Van Tassell joined ESRT’s Board of Directors with expertise in finance and strategic growth in digital media and transformation in mid-July.
CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS
ESRT announced that it opened a new all-hands space at 1400 Broadway, and unveiled plans for an outdoor rooftop deck and function space with sweeping city and Empire State Building views at 1333 Broadway. The new office amenities will be new features for all tenants at ESRT’s Broadway Campus that includes its properties at 1333 Broadway , 1350 Broadway, 1359 Broadway, 1400 Broadway, 501 Seventh Avenue, 111 W. 33rd Street, and the Empire State Building.
NEW LEASES
Capco – a global financial technology and management consultancy – signed a new long-term lease for a 26,620 square foot space at the Empire State Building. ESRT also welcomed Club Pilates and A Cut Above 7 to the retail portfolio at 501 Seventh Avenue and renewed a lease with AT&T at 250 West 57th Street.
AUGUST
TEE PARTY
The annual Golf Outing took place at the Golf Club of Purchase on Aug. 18. Brokers participated in a friendly tournament on the links before a cocktail reception and awards ceremony.
FUTURE TALK
Chairman, President, and CEO Tony Malkin joined Afire to discuss the roadmap for the future of sustainability and the workplace, the current real estate market environment, and the Empire State Building as a unit of measurement.
SEPTEMBER
IEQ WINS
Amid the 2023 Canadian wildfires, ESRT demonstrated the effectiveness of its industry-leading indoor environmental quality measures against the record-breaking air pollution in New York City.
OCTOBER
POWER PLAYER
The Empire State Building took two major BOMA Awards – which includes the 2023 Grand Pinnacle Award – and the New York Chamber of Commerce’s Landmark Icon of the Year Award through the teams’ dedication to the tenant experience, the building’s modernized, amenity-rich property, and its world-class brand.
OPENING BELL
ESRT leaders, along with ESRT’s beloved mascot Emma Pire, rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange to celebrate the company’s 10-year anniversary and the 45th annual Empire State Building Run-Up.
NOVEMBER
Fashion brand Kith released a New York Knicks x Kith collection in November that featured photos of notable Knicks players shot at the Empire State Building and 1333 Broadway.
DECEMBER
AMONG THE GREATS
Newsweek named ESRT one of America’s Most Responsible Companies in 2023 for its outstanding work in sustainability and energy efficiency.
THOUGHT LEADER
Christina Chiu, ESRT’s VP, COO & CFO joined Commercial Observer’s Investor Series to discuss capital markets and ESRT’s opportunistic strategies.
MERRY AND BRIGHT
ESRT rounded out 2023 with its annual company holiday party in December. Colleagues gathered at Bourbon & Branch to celebrate another successful year.
